Years ago, when I was first diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), I felt as though my body had betrayed me. Simple tasks became difficult, and I was overwhelmed by fatigue and pain. I that I couldn’t continue living the way I had been. That diagnosis was the wake-up call I needed to explore how my body worked on a cellular level and what I could do to support it.
One of the most transformative discoveries on my journey was understanding the role of mitochondria. These tiny, often-overlooked structures became my focus as I worked to regain my and strength. Today, I want to share what I’ve learned about mitochondria and how nurturing them can help you build both a stronger body and a more resilient mind.
The Mitochondrial Connection to Daily Life

At the height of my RA symptoms, I remember days when I could barely drag myself out of bed. I thought I lacked willpower or energy, but what I’ve since learned is that the health of my mitochondria was playing a key role.
Mitochondria are like tiny power plants inside your cells, producing energy for everything you do—from walking across the room to solving a problem at work. When they’re functioning well, you feel it: you’re energized, focused, and capable. When they’re not, it’s like trying to power a city with a single light bulb.
Here are a few ways mitochondria affect your daily life:
1. Energy Levels: If you’ve ever felt physically drained for no apparent reason, your
mitochondria may not be producing energy efficiently.
2. Mental Clarity: Brain fog was one of my biggest struggles when I was unwell. It wasn’t until I began supporting my mitochondrial health that I experienced the mental clarity I needed to thrive.
3. Stress Resilience: We all face stress, but robust mitochondria can help you bounce back more easily. I noticed that as my mitochondrial health improved, I was better able to navigate both physical and emotional challenges.
My Turning Point: The Role of Functional Medicine
When I was first diagnosed, I didn’t fully understand what was happening in my body. I felt powerless until I discovered functional medicine, which focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of health issues. Learning about how mitochondria fuel every cell in the body helped me see that I had the power to support my own healing through intentional choices.
For example, I began focusing on nutrient-dense foods, restorative sleep, and stress
management—not just as self-care practices but as essential components of cellular health. These small changes added up, transforming not just how I felt physically but also my outlook on life.
Nurturing Your Cellular Powerhouses
Supporting mitochondrial health doesn’t require a major life overhaul. Small, intentional changes can make a significant impact over time. Here are the strategies I’ve used—and still use—to nurture my mitochondria:
1. Nourish with Nutrient-Rich Foods
When I started focusing on what I was putting into my body, I noticed a huge difference
in my energy levels. For me, this meant spending Sunday mornings at the farmer’s
market, stocking up on organic fruits, vegetables, and seeds. This routine not only
nourished my body but also became a calming ritual I look forward to each week.
Tip: Incorporate more whole, minimally processed foods into your meals. Leafy greens,
colorful fruits, and nuts provide the magnesium, antioxidants, and B vitamins your cells
need.
2. Move Your Body Daily
Movement became a game-changer for me. I started small—just short walks to loosen up my joints—but over time, I worked up to more consistent exercise. Regular movement helps create new mitochondria, which means more energy for everything you do.
Tip: Find an activity you enjoy and start small. Whether it’s yoga, a brisk walk, or
dancing in your living room, consistency is key.
3. Prioritize Restorative Sleep
During my healing journey, I learned that sleep is when your body does its most
important repair work. I established a calming bedtime routine to help me get the
restorative sleep my body desperately needed.
Tip: Set a consistent bedtime and create a relaxing pre-sleep ritual, like dimming the
lights and reading a book. Quality sleep is essential for mitochondrial repair.
4. Manage Stress
Stress used to feel like an unavoidable part of life, but I’ve learned that it doesn’t have to control me. By incorporating mindfulness practices, like journaling and deep breathing, I’ve been able to protect my energy and stay grounded.
Tip: Dedicate just five minutes a day to a stress-reduction practice that resonates with
you, whether it’s meditation, stretching, or spending time in nature.
5. Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration was another simple but effective change I made. Water supports all
cellular processes, including mitochondrial energy production.
Tip: Keep a water bottle nearby as a gentle reminder to stay hydrated throughout the day.
The Ripple Effect of Mitochondrial Health
As I began focusing on my mitochondria, the changes were undeniable. I had more energy to build my business, connect with loved ones, and pursue the things that brought me joy. I no longer felt trapped in survival mode—I was finally thriving.
While everyone’s journey is unique, prioritizing mitochondrial health may support:
Increased physical energy and endurance.
Sharper mental clarity and improved focus.
Greater resilience to life’s challenges.
Faster recovery from stress or physical exertion.
Resilient Minds and Cognitive Health
Mitochondrial health doesn’t just affect your body—it’s critical for your brain. Research shows that mitochondrial dysfunction may contribute to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Supporting mitochondrial health could play a role in preserving cognitive function, especially as we age.
For me, improving mitochondrial health was about more than avoiding future risks—it was about living fully in the present. Having the mental clarity and energy to engage with my work and relationships has been one of the greatest rewards of this journey.
